Mr. Ellinwood has been a long-term member of the Board of Governors of Arizona Attorneys for Criminal Justice, a statewide criminal defense lawyer organization.  In 2003, Mr. Ellinwood had the great honor to be the AACJ president.

Mr. Ellinwood also has taught legal writing at the University of Arizona law school. 

Mr. Ellinwood is a former member of Pima County's Canoa Ranch Community Trust/Oversight Committee and the Tucson Convention Center oversight committee. Currently, he serves as President of the Friends of Canoa, a nonprofit corporation supporting the Pima County's Canoa Ranch.*

Mr. Ellinwood has more than 40 years of experience in the most demanding aspects of trial practice.  He has been an elected District Attorney, served as a Public Defender, and has been in private practice in Tucson and rural southwestern New Mexico. 

Mr. Ellinwood has tried well over 200 cases to juries, and has been first chair in 16 capital cases, none of which resulted in the death penalty.

Mr. Ellinwood has extensive experience in the defense of accusations of sexual misconduct and internet or computer sex crimes. 

His experience also qualifies him to manage and try complex cases including accusations of white-collar crime, fraud, and financial and sex crimes.

Ralph E. Ellinwood


Born in Tucson in 1944, Mr. Ellinwood is the eldest of the fourth generation of this territorial family. Mr. Ellinwood has continued a legacy of lawyering established by his great-grandfather E.E. Ellinwood, who moved to Arizona in 1889.

E.E. Ellinwood was a lawyer of prominence in Arizona. Among many honors, he served as a United States Attorney, a district attorney, a member of the Arizona Constitutional Convention, candidate for Governor, and member of the Arizona Board of Regents.

Ralph Ellinwood's maternal grandfather, Harry O. Juliani, a co-founder of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, was also a lawyer. Mr. Juliani took a special interest in cases of immigrants and underrepresented people in their struggle for individual rights and fair treatment.

Ralph Ellinwood's uncle, John C. Ellinwood, was a distinguished member of a prominent Phoenix law firm for many years.


Ralph E. Ellinwood graduated from The University of Arizona in Tucson with bachelor's degree in 1971 and his JD in 1974. He was admitted to practice in the State of Arizona in 1974 and to New Mexico in 1976.

Mr. Ellinwood continue to be licensed to practice in Arizona and New Mexico.
